But this had been God's plan from the beginning when he had told Abraham (Genesis -14) and later Moses (Exodus -22) that this would come to pass.
Now came the final plague: " At midnight the LORD struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh, who sat on the throne, to the firstborn of the prisoner, who was in the dungeon, and the firstborn of all the livestock as well.
This figure was later popularized in Judaism and Christianity as the "angel of death." No Egyptian household was untouched that night, not even Pharaoh's.
" The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are; and when I see the blood, I will pass over you." (Exodus 12:7, 13) The word "Passover" is found in Exodus , 21, 26, 43, 48; . The word is Of these, the sacrifice of the Passover lamb bears some resemblance to the peace or fellowship offering, in which a piece of meat is offered before the Lord and to the priests.
The remainder of the sacrifice is eaten by the offerer and his family as a kind of celebration meal -- similar to the celebration meal of the Passover.
